Bulgaria: Eastern Europe’s Not So Hidden Tourism Gem

Bulgaria has been getting quite a bit of buzz lately as a not-so-secret hotspot in Eastern Europe. The country is in the midst of a real estate boom particularly when it comes to foreign investors. And if this year’s tourism numbers are any indication, the buzz is only going to continue to increase about this charming Balkan nation.

Last year, more than eight million visitors—more than the country’s population—travelled to Bulgaria, and for 2017, numbers are expected to surpass the nine million mark. During the summer season alone, 5.3 million visitors came to explore the sun-drenched coastline, dramatic scenery, and cultural attractions this country has to offer. This represents a 6% increase in visitors over last year, with the majority of visitors are from countries like Germany, Romania, Greece, and Russia.

And even though summer is over, tourism activity is showing no signs of slowing down. With the busy holiday season quickly approaching, many top hotels are already fully booked from December through to January. What accommodations are left tend to be in smaller centres or further away from the country’s more popular sites. While that’s good news for hotel owners, it can cause headaches for travellers looking to experience Bulgaria.

But with everything from soaring mountains, to contemporary art and culture in the capital Sofia, to sun, sand, and surf on the coastline, it’s no surprise word is getting out. A stable and growing economy doesn’t hurt either. But regardless of whether you’re just looking to visit or if you’re looking for something a little more long-term, Bulgaria should be at the top of every travellers’ “to-see” list.
