St. Kitts and Nevis is a small country in the midst of a big-time boom. In the past week alone, the country has announced record cruise ship calls, celebrated the islands’ young entrepreneurs, and strengthened diplomatic relations. Not bad for a place that’s only around 261 kilometres square.
Speaking in the capital, Basseterre, last week Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Timothy Harris pointed to the booming cruise ship industry as a prime example of how St. Kitts and Nevis is in the middle of a significant boom. In December 2017 alone, there is only one day with no planned cruise ship arrivals, with many days seeing four-five ships in port at a time. Further, for the upcoming 2017-2018 season, a total of 569 cruise ships are expected to call, bringing more than 1.5 million passengers to St. Kitts and Nevis’ pristine shores.
While St. Kitts and Nevis relies heavily on tourism revenue to drive the economy, the people behind creating the infrastructure to support the industry are largely entrepreneurs. In an effort to create a more supportive environment for local businesses, from November 13-19, St. Kitts and Nevis will be hosting events tied to Youth Month and specifically, Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) with a specific theme of “No One Left Behind: Entrepreneurship for All”.
GEW is held in 160 countries around the world and is a celebration of innovators and job creators who bring ideas to life and drive economic growth through entrepreneurism. In St. Kitts and Nevis, entrepreneurs from across the islands will come together to showcase ideas and to take part in seminars designed to help increase their business acumen, and meet with other successful and more established business people. By having a dedicated week to focus on the islands’ up and coming business people, it provides an opportunity to foster the future of the economy, ensuring success for generations to come.
But St. Kitts and Nevis isn’t just looking inside the country for growth and progress—this has also been a busy week for strengthening relationships elsewhere. In a recent ceremony at the High Commission, His Excellency Dr. Kevin Isaac, high commissioner of St. Kitts and Nevis joined HE Filipe Chidumo, high commissioner of Mozambique to formalize diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The signing was merely a formal recognition of the collaboration already occurring between the governments of Mozambique and St. Kitts and Nevis. Both countries have been working collaboratively on common causes such as sustainable development, small state vulnerabilities, and other challenges faced by still-developing countries.
