|||Canada is part of what was once known as British North America. In 1867, several colonies joined to form the federal Dominion of Canada. As more provinces and territories joined, Canada expanded and today is the second largest country in the world in terms of total area.
Though Canada has been fully independent since 1931, the British Parliament maintained power over the constitution until the Constitution Act was passed in 1982. Though Canada is now a federal parliamentary democracy, it is still considered a constitutional monarchy meaning Queen Elizabeth II is technically the head of state. Canada is part of the Commonwealth of Nations, the United Nations, NATO, G7, G20, and more.
Canada was known for having one of the best—and most affordable—citizenship by investment programs in the world, but with the passing of Bill C-31 in June, 2014 the program requirements have been tightened.
Two provinces offer legally sanctioned citizenship by investment programs: the predominantly French speaking province of Quebec and the small island province Prince Edward Island (PEI).
The Quebec Immigrant Investor Program was first introduced in 1986 but had been closed to new applicants until recently. From May 29, 2017 to February 23, 2018 the program has been reopened to new applicants.
Prince Edward Island offers the Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). This program attracts foreign investors to establish or invest in a business in PEI in exchange for permanent residency.
