|||The first unified Bulgarian state—also known as the first Bulgarian empire—emerged in 681 AD. After WWII, Bulgaria became a one-party socialist state as part of the Eastern Bloc until eventually, in 1989, the country made the transition into a democracy and a market-based economy.
The current constitution was adopted in July, 1991 by the 7th Grand National Assembly of Bulgaria and it has been amended five times since.
