The two-island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis is the smallest sovereign state in the Western Hemisphere. As is fitting for such a Lilliputian place, the capital, Basseterre, takes up just 6.1 square kilometres.

As one may imagine, such a small place has a small population to match—only around 12,000 Kittitians call this piece of tropical paradise home. But despite what the numbers may say, Basseterre is big on charm and character.

Located on the island of Saint Kitts, Basseterre is one of the oldest towns in the Eastern Caribbean. It also has one of the most tumultuous histories—colonial wars, fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and riots have all wrecked havoc over the years. Despite that, there are still a number of historic buildings and sites that have survived the years.

There are only four main streets, which means most things are within walking distance of each other. There are two city centres: The Circus—think less three-ringed and more Piccadilly—which is more touristy and Independence Square which is where most of the historic buildings can be found. For what Basseterre may lack in size, it makes up for in Caribbean charm and picturesque scenery.
