Consisting of over 80 separate islands, Vanuatu is nestled in the southwest Pacific Ocean to the north of New Zealand and east of Australia. Palm trees, shockingly clear turquoise blue waters, misty volcanoes, dense jungle, and vibrant coral reefs are all part of the post-card worthy views.<\/p>\n
Of the 80+ islands, around 65 are inhabited, meaning visitors can island hop and experience a different slice of life, culture, and scenery all without ever having to get another stamp on their passport.<\/p>\n
Vanuatu is further broken down into six provinces: Malampa, Penama, Sanma, Tafea, Torba, and Shefa\u2014home of the island of Efate which houses the capital city, Port-Vila.<\/p>\n
With a population of just over 44,000 you could be fooled into thinking not much happens in this tiny town. But Port-Vila is actually one of the most multi-cultural places in the whole world. Its inhabitants come from over 100 different language and cultural groups\u2014who have all brought regional traditions, cultures, and dialects with them to their adopted home. However you don\u2019t need to be a linguist to visit, despite this wide range of cultural diversity, the main languages spoken are still English and French, as well as Bislama\u2014a native Vanuatu language\u2014meaning you should have no trouble finding your way around.<\/p>\n
The pristine natural surroundings are obviously a big draw for visiting Port-Vila. There\u2019s something for every taste. From hiking to the top of one of the active volcanoes that pock-mark the islands, to diving and snorkeling to see the colorful marine life that call the surrounding waters home, to relaxing at the spa, or witnessing a lively cultural ritual, there\u2019s a little bit of something for every visitor.<\/p>\n
In Port-Vila proper, one of the main attractions is the markets. Many women from local villages make the trek to Port-Vila\u2019s picturesque waterfront to sell their wares like fruits and vegetables, clothing, souvenirs, jewellery, carvings, and more. Unlike most markets, there is no culture of bartering\u2014prices are marked as is\u2014lending a relaxed vibe to the whole experience.<\/p>\n
In fact, the laid-back pace can be felt outside of the market stalls and throughout the entire country, making Vanuatu the perfect destination to escape the hustle and bustle of every day life.<\/p>\n
