Taking<br \/>\nover from Estonia, the presidency rotates between the 28 different EU member states with each<br \/>\ncountry getting a six month term before handing it over to the next. Following its term, Bulgaria<br \/>\nwill hand over the title to Austria on July 1, 2018.<br \/>\nThe presidency will give Bulgaria the opportunity to chair meetings and set agendas but it won\u2019t<br \/>\nbe an easy term\u2014the ongoing migrant crisis and Brexit negotiations will be just two of the<br \/>\nchallenges to navigate.<br \/>\nBut Bulgaria also has its own agenda items to further: the future of Europe and specifically, its<br \/>\nyoung people; new EU membership for Balkan states; security and stability; and the digital<br \/>\neconomy. Bulgaria has chosen the slogan \u201cUnited we stand strong\u201d to mark its presidency\u2014a<br \/>\nmotto from the nation\u2019s coat of arms.<br \/>\nUnity will be a key issue as Bulgaria will need to manage a June deadline for EU leaders to<br \/>\noverhaul the Dublin Regulation (under which the country where an asylum seeker arrives is<br \/>\nresponsible for them), find common ground on the terms for Brexit, and manage threats to rule<br \/>\nof law coming from Hungary, Poland, and Romania.<br \/>\nThe meetings and negotiations will be held in Bulgaria\u2019s capital, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.migrateworld.com\/spotlight-on-sofia-bulgaria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u0635\u0648\u0641\u064a\u0627<\/a> in the National Palace of<br \/>\nCulture.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On January 1, 2018 Bulgaria took over the revolving presidency of the European Union.
